Shrine Bowl picks Carter

July 10, 2008

Recent Basehor-Linwood High School graduate Swede Johnson is one of 68 football players from across Kansas invited to participate in the 35th annual Shrine Bowl on July 26 at Welch Stadium at Emporia State University.

Johnson's selection came as little surprise, considering he was one of the Kaw Valley League's most dominant linemen.

What may be surprising was the selection of 2008 Bonner Springs High School graduate James Carter. After all, Carter didn't play high school football.

Actually, Carter won't be participating in the Shrine Bowl football game. He will partake in the festivities, however, as a competitor in the inaugural Shrine Bowl cross country race.

A 5-kilometer run took place at the 2007 Shrine Bowl, but it was an open race rather than a competitive invitational event. That's where this year's 5K is different.

Sixty of the top male and female high school runners in the state were invited to compete in the Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Cross Country Run. They will be divided into four teams of 15 runners. Two boys teams and two girls teams will compete while representing the east and west halves of the state, just like the way the football teams are divided.

Carter will compete for the east boys. He will be joined by Tyler Anliker, Asher Delmott, Andrew Wayman and Jacob Davies of Emporia; Jordan Bauer of Wabaunsee; Brandon Garcia of Osawatomie; Jesse Gonzales of Wamego; Aaron Karlin of Baldwin; David Keach of Neodesha; John Sanell of Shawnee Mission South; Lucas Straub of Jackson Heights; Pete Symmonds of Northern Heights and Taylor Wofford of Olathe East.

The race begins at 7:30 a.m. on July 26 at the ESU Physical Education Building.

In addition to the All-Star event, runners interested in participating in the 5K recreationally or participating in the 1-mile fun run may do so for a $30 advance registration fee. Race day registration is $40.

The Shrine Bowl football game kicks off at 7 p.m. on July 26. Adult general admission tickets cost $9 in advance and $10 on game night. Student tickets are $5 in advance and $6 on game night. Reserved chair-back tickets cost $20 in advance and $21 on game night.

To purchase advance tickets, contact the Shrine Bowl office at 1-800-530-5524.
