Final park concert set for Friday

July 31, 2008

It's bluegrass with a little added twist.

The Stranger Creek String Band will be wrapping up the Basehor Community Library's Summer Concert Series in the Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Basehor City Park, and the audience can expect everything from the classics to the kooky.

"We do everything from Gershwin to the Chicken Dance," said Paul Wilburn, violin and viola player for the group and the orchestra director for the Basehor-Linwood School District.

The quartet consists of Wilburn, Doug Rippee and Barry Brown, both on the guitar, mandolin and vocals, and Doug Doering on bass. While all four members are veteran musicians, Brown started the group in 2006 and soon gained Rippee and Doering. Wilburn joined in March, and the band has been performing at different venues around the Kansas City area since then. Wilburn said the loyal bluegrass following in the area not only led him to the group, but also brings the audience to their gigs.

"The bluegrass community is pretty tight knit," he said. "We're just four guys that like to play music together and explore different avenues. It's a fun time."

The group has been keeping itself busy this summer with consistent weekend performances and working on material for recording. The bluegrass, jam band and jazz sounds of the Stranger Creek String Band's first CD can be purchased at the show for $5.

"It's a growing process," Wilburn said about the budding band. "We do it for the music, we do it for ourselves, and if people want to come hear us, that's even better."

Assistant library director Jenne Laytham said patrons' positive reactions to the band's performance at Dairy Days earlier this summer was one of the reasons the library decided to bring Stranger Creek back for the summer concert series.

"Everybody liked them," Laytham said. "It seems like people are really into that type of music again."

Residents are encouraged to bring the entire family, blankets and lawn chairs and arrive early to enjoy the last show of the summer at Basehor City Park, 158th Street and Leavenworth Road. The Basehor Veterans of Foreign Wars will be selling concessions before and during the performance.
