Bobcats lose in state play
Basehor-Linwood's first state tournament appearance in more than a decade ended with a first-round loss on Wednesday.
The Bobcats lost to Holton High School 55-51 in a game that was decided by foul shots.
With less than two minutes to play, Cassie Lombardino made a pair of foul shots and gave the Bobcats a 46-45 lead.
From that point, the game's momentum went toward Holton.
Holton basketball player Whitney Degenhardt was fouled, and went to the foul line. She made a pair of foul shots to give her team a 47-46 lead.
Basehor-Linwood turned the ball over on its possession, and Melissa Nelson drew a foul. She made both foul shots.
Basehor-Linwood failed to score on its next possession. Holton got the ball back and Crista Bechard was fouled. She went to the line and made two foul shots.
With 16 seconds left, when it looked like the game might get away from the Bobcats, Ashley Jeannin drilled a three-pointer to make it a 51-49 game.
She fouled out on the team's next possession.
Holton went on to score two more points and take a 53-49 lead on two Nelson free throws.
On Basehor's next possession, Amber Jeannin was fouled and made two shots to make the score 53-51.
Holton made two more foul shots and led 55-51 with less than 10 seconds to play.
Lombardino took one last three-point attempt, but to no avail as time expired.
Lombardino finished the game with 20 points and Brooke Sanders scored 10.
The Bobcats other scorers in the game were Ashley Jeannin, 6; Amber Jeannin, 4; Courtney Hooks, 4; Bren Koontz, 3; Megan O'Bryan, 2; Michelle Chrisman, 2.
Nelson led Holton with 24 points. She made 11-of-13 foul shots. Crista Bechard finished with 11 points. The team's other scorers were Leah Day, 5; Maggie Schuetz, 4; Shelby Dallman, 4; Whitney Degenhardt, 2; Sydney Strader, 2.
Holton led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. Basehor-Linwood outscored them 13-9 in the second quarter and led 24-23 at intermission.
The two teams battled one another for the first three quarters of play.
At the end of the third quarter, both teams were shooting 37 percent from the field. Lombardino had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Ashley Jeannin drilled a three-pointer to give Basehor-Linwood a 35-32 lead with less than a minute to play in the quarter.
Holton tied the game up on a pair of free throws from Melissa Nelson with 34 seconds left in the quarter.
The score was 35-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Basehor-Linwood ends the year with a 22-2 record and its first trip to the state tournament since the 1994-95 school year.
Holton will advance to play Colby, 23-0, at 3 p.m. Friday in a semfinal game.
