Project Grad fund goal nearly complete
Prom exchange event to benefit year-end event
In the hopes of raising the last $1,500 of the $20,000 needed for the year-end event, Bonner Springs Project Graduation recently sent out letters to local businesses - prompting one business to stage a unique fundraiser.
Project Grad organizes the year-end, drug- and alcohol-free all-night party for graduating students, for which $18,500 of the group's $20,000 goal has been raised.
Pink Zebra Boutique came up with a creative event to raise money, which could also save female prom-goers some dough.
The store, at 221 Oak St., is sponsoring Operation Prom Dress, which will allow the exchanging of a gently used prom dress for another, barely used dress, or the purchase of such a dress for a small donation to Project Graduation.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday at the store, donations will be accepted of dresses no older than 4 years old, clean and in like-new condition on a hanger, as well as shoes.
A ticket will be given in exchange for a donated dress, which will be accepted at the dress swap, which will be 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the store.
Dresses or shoes left at the end of the event will be sold and all the proceeds will benefit the Bonner Springs High School Project Graduation.
For those not donating a dress, a $10 donation to Project Graduation will buy a dress. A $5 donation is requested for shoes.
Most of the money raised this year has been through the food booth operated by volunteers during races as the Kansas Speedway, said Project Grad president Barbara Bille. Project Grad booth workers had sold about $68,000 worth of nachos, hamburgers and pizza, but the Speedway keeps 90 percent of the profits, Bille said.
"We work very hard to keep that booth," Bille said, because the Speedway has strict requirements that the booth be manned by so many people for so many days in a row.
The $20,000 will go to renting a space - this year it will be Power Play, a video-game-and-pizza restaurant in Shawnee - plus gifts for the grads.
