Basehor soccer team looks for new defense
To improve upon the best season in the program's history, the Basehor-Linwood girl's soccer team will have to completely remake its defense. Luckily, the Bobcats return plenty of offensive firepower.
"Our offense is going to be very powerful with Jessica Smith, Shanna Couch and Audrey Brock. Those three are really going to give us a potent punch," coach Kevin Vincent said. "We have an almost completely new defense. Megan O'Bryan is the only returning defender from last year. I still think we will be very good back there."
Smith and Couch were named to the Kaw Valley League's first-team. Smith was also named to the all-state first-team. Couch was named to the all-state second-team. Both Smith and Couch were second-team all-state selections two years ago.
Smith finished with 25 goals and six assists. Couch had 14 goals with 17 assists.
"I think we've got a lot of good returning players and some talented freshman that are going to contribute," Vincent said.
Brock was an honorable mention to the league team last year.
"Audrey Brock is primed to have a big season," Vincent said.
O'Bryan, who received second-team status last year, is a key player according to Vincent. She will be starting at sweeper this year, the last line of defense. Vincent said she will be instrumental in communicating with the young defense.
Last year's 8-7-1 record was the best in program's history, but the team was shocked in a 4-0 loss to De Soto in postseason play.
"I thought we made some progress as a team and got better as the season went on," Vincent said. "We didn't accomplish our end goal of winning a regional game, but we had a lot of younger players step up."
Vincent said the team doesn't have any concrete goals.
"We just want to build on what we did last year and come together as a team," Vincent said. "Just getting better each game and being better at the end of the season than we are now."
The Bobcats started the season with a 7-0 win over Cair Paravel in the season opener.
Smith had three goals and Carol Smith recorded the shutout. The team will take on De Soto Thursday night in Basehor.
