Lions survive slow start, move to 8-0
The Lansing High football team survived a slow start before pulling away for a 29-0 victory over Schlagle on Friday night.
With the win, LHS improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in district play. Mill Valley defeated Washington 34-6 in the other district game and moved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the district. Both LHS and Mill Valley secured berths in the Class 5A state playoffs, but the district champion has yet to be decided. Both teams will square off at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at MVHS in a clash that will determine the district — as well as Kaw Valley League — champion. The game will be broadcast live on Metro Sports as its Game of the Week.
Lansing came out flat in the first quarter against Schlagle. The Lions coughed the ball up twice on their first two possessions and didn't record a first down until 49 seconds were left in the opening quarter. Schlagle drove to the Lansing 18-yard line early but was unable to capitalize.
The Lions finally broke through with 1:27 left in the second quarter when Brenton Smith capped the team's fourth possession of the game with a 2-yard touchdown run. Matt Robbins' extra point made it 7-0. Robbins missed a 28-yard field goal attempt with 1 second left in the first half, and the Lions took their 7-0 lead into halftime.
Lansing revved up in the third quarter with a 13-play scoring drive. Smith scored on a 1-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0 with 6:17 left in the third quarter.
The Lions turned the ball over with their third fumble of the game on the next possession, but they regrouped when they got teh ball back and went eight plays over the next 2:12. That drive was capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Trowbridge to Peter Gibson. Smith ran in the 2-point conversion and the Lions led 22-0 with 4:00 left in the game.
Nick Brungardt picked off a pass late and returned it 29 yards to the 18-yard line. Moments later Trowbridge scored on a 9-yard run in the final minute to make it 29-0.
Smith finished the game with 96 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. He now has 1,290 yards and 21 touchdowns on 214 carries this season.
Nathan Wessel ran 10 times for 60 yards and Trowbridge ran 10 times for 63 yards and a touchdown. Trowbridge also completed four of 12 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.
