BLHS Soccer battles Tonganoxie to a draw
After 100 minutes of soccer last week, the Basehor-Linwood and Tonganoxie High School soccer teams had to settle for a tie.
The score was tied 2-2 entering overtime and neither team could score a goal needed to break the tie in two overtimes.
Coach Kevin Vincent said his team made some nice plays in the Tonganoxie game, but couldn't finish enough scoring opportunities.
Tonganoxie goalie Mitch DeHoff was a difference maker in the game. He was impressive throughout the first period, jumping, diving, punching and swatting away Basehor-Linwood shot attempts.
The score was 0-0 at halftime.
"We had a lot of opportunities and a lot of shots on goal," Vincent said. "Their keeper made a lot of great saves. We had a lot of opportunities and could not convert enough of them."
Tonganoxie scored early in the second period when THS senior Jamison Bloomer attempted a corner kick that was hit into the goal on a header by senior Austin Smith.
Basehor-Linwood tied the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute when Tanner Bowers made a penalty kick. The kick was set up by a Tonganoxie hand ball.
Basehor-Linwood took the lead in the 65th minute when Bo Himpel scored a goal that sailed just over DeHoff's head.
Tonganoxie tied the game in the 77th minute of play when Bruce Oregel made a shot to the right of Ryan Lawless.
Neither team scored in two overtime periods. Vincent said Tonganoxie is a vastly improved team during the game.
"Tonganoxie is much improved from previous years," he said. "They played a great game, we played a great game. We just couldn't come through with a win that night."
Basehor-Linwood played Lansing on Wednesday. Results of the game were not available by press time, but will be available online at www.basehorinfo.com.
Basehor-Linwood plays St. James Academy at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, at Stump Park.
