Get digging to prepare for election

September 18, 2008

"We are not fruit flies, we are voters, we can read and write, we didn't just fall off the coal truck." - Garrison Keillor

"I told Congress, 'Thanks, but no thanks' on that bridge to nowhere." - Gov. Sarah Palin.

"I pledge that under my plan, no one making less than $250,000 a year will see any type of tax increase, not income tax, not capital gains taxes, not any kind of tax." - Sen. Barack Obama.

"We have made 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling." - Sen. Hillary Clinton.

"Palin suggested Obama may have made a mistake in not picking Sen. Hillary Clinton as his running mate." - Curtis interview with Palin., Kansas City Star

"I will fight for you. Fight with me. Fight with me. Fight with me." - Sen. John McCain

"My mother said, 'if they hit you, bloody their noses, so you can walk past them the next day." - Sen. Joe Biden.

"Yes," she said. "I told him that." - Joe Biden's mother.

"A black man will ascend to the seat of power in this country before a white woman." - Dean of Women, Emily Taylor.

"Your country will never elect a woman President; you're just not grown up enough." - A woman at a bistro in France.

"I don't have an opinion who I should vote for; I just want for someone else to tell me what to do." - Local citizen, waiting in line at a local election.

No matter what others think of us; it matters a great deal what we think of ourselves; whether we think at all. This election matters; you are a vital link in a free democracy.

It is not simply whom we elect president, but what we know about the person and the issues they stand for; how willing we are to educate ourselves about the candidates, and the issues facing our country. It is not enough to wait for someone else to tell us what to do. It is time to grow up in this country.

We can choose to sit through tedious hours of interviews, read endless media commentary, dig through reports, read the business section of the paper as well as the food and sports sections, form educated opinions and vote accordingly. Or we can choose to wait and have someone else tell us what to do. If we take that option, the glass ceiling may fall down upon our shoulders, Congress may meet in churches, and your vote won't make any difference anyway. "We are not fruit flies; we didn't just fall off a coal truck."

Time to start digging! If you've already started, keep on; you are not digging alone.

The truth you unearth today may be a seed that will grow into a tree of knowledge tomorrow. Knowledge is power; ignorance alone may be our downfall.
