Craig nabs gold at Bonner Springs Invitational
The Lansing High girls finished third and the LHS boys were sixth on Saturday at the Bonner Springs Invitational cross country meet at Wyandotte County Park.
De Soto swept the team titles.
Junior Brandon Craig was the meet's top performer. He won the boys 5K race in 16:38 - 36 seconds ahead of runner-up Brooks Ballou of Bonner Springs.
Craig's time would have been better had he seen where the proper finish line was. Craig stopped where the flags began to keep spectators away from the finish line, only he had another 200 feet to go. Fortunately for him, he had a comfortable lead and Bonner Springs track coach Jim Mitchell - who was monitoring the finish line - got Craig's attention showing him the proper line.
"I thought that was the line - my coach had told us that was the line," Craig said. "It was a tiring race. I was kind of disappointed because I wanted to get under 16 (minutes). I liked the course because the hills felt good going up, I just worry about falling coming back down them."
Sophomore Pete LaMoe joined Craig in the top 10 with an eighth-place finish in 17:46.
Greg Bremser (24th, 18:42), Ezra Carpenter (50th, 19:54), Scott Moore (72nd, 20:34) and Michael Hornick (21:40) rounded out the Lions' lineup.
The Lansing girls had better all-around balance, and it showed in their high finish in the team standings. Junior Lauren Jaqua finished third overall in 16:27. De Soto's Ellie Sheridan was the meet champion in 15:20 and De Soto's Lacey Erickson was second in 16:11.
Junior Melanie Pilkington, Lansing's second runner, finished 17th in 17:21. One second behind her was teammate Julia Beemer, a freshman, in 18th. Junior Julia Winkler was 24th in 17:37 and junior Kate Meara was 41st in 18:33. Kristen Fowles rounded out the LHS lineup in 49th in 18:58.
