Bonner Springs golfers third at Mill Valley
The Bonner Springs boys golf team hoped to build off of its strong season-opening performance at the Sunflower Hills Invitational, and the Braves did just that on Wednesday, April 8, when they competed at the Mill Valley Invitational.
The Braves fired a four-player score of 356 to place third overall at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course. St. Thomas Aquinas won the team title with a 344, and St. James Academy was second with 350.
The Braves’ strong finish was bolstered by two strong individual efforts. Steven Shores placed second overall with an 80 and Parker Miller took third with an 82.
Tonganoxie’s Colby Yates was the tournament champion with a 76.
Both Shores and Miller were consistent throughout the day, with Shores shooting a 40 on both the front and back nine, and Miller posting a pair of 41s.
Also for the Braves, Blake McMahon shot a 94, Steven Walker had a 100, and Logan Opat fired a 109. Opat shot a 41 on the front nine, but a rough back nine took him out of medal contention quickly.
Basehor-Linwood also competed at the tournament, and the Bobcats finished in the middle of the pack in the team standings.
The Bobcats had no medalists, although Chris Douglas came close with a score of 90. Bobby Courtney shot 92, Ryan Fritz and Jake Hattock each shot 94, and Tung Dejong shot a 95.
“It was a little windy and was a pretty tough course,” BLHS coach Bruce Courtney said. “It was our first time out and still a little early yet. We are not quite seasoned yet. All of them were 10 strokes higher than they could be.”
