Officials’ yards victimized by off-road driver
Bonner Springs Police are investigating an early-morning incident Wednesday in which a man reportedly drove off the road and into the yards of Mayor Clausie Smith and City Manager John “Jack” Helin.
The driver left the scene of the accident this morning after striking such objects as trees, bushes and a rock wall in at least two yards — Smith’s and Helin’s — in the Whispering Woods subdivision, which is off of 138th and Grove streets. But the suspect vehicle — a 2008 Ford Econoline — was left behind, giving police a huge clue as to the driver.
The accident occurred between midnight and 4 a.m., and police say it appears the driver was westbound on Morse when the vehicle left the roadway.
Lt. Rick Schubert said Wednesday afternoon the cause of the accident was still being investigated. A suspect has been located, though no arrests had been made as of mid-afternoon. Police are considering charges that include leaving the scene of an accident, inattentive driving, failing to stop at a stop sign and failure to wear a seatbelt.
The driver did not hit anybody, but Schubert indicated the suspect may have suffered some injuries in the accident.
