Humane Society discusses reporting animal abuse
The Leavenworth County Humane Society is reminding community members to notify the city police or the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office if they see, know of, or suspect animal cruelty or neglect.
Leavenworth County Humane Society (LCHS) has no investigative or law enforcement authority. Only law enforcement has the legal authority to take an animal from an owner. LCHS encourages people to get the officer or deputy's name responding, along with the report number. Once the humane society has that information, it can follow up, and can encourage prosecution of the offender.
When LCHS receives animal cruelty reports, it sends a representative to the property to take photos if possible, and it notifies law enforcement. LHCS says, however, these situations can be handled much more quickly, if they are reported to those who can immediately respond and take action legally.
