Candidates prepare for primary elections

February 26, 2009

Primary elections in Wyandotte County will be Tuesday, and residents of Bonner Springs and Edwardsville will have the opportunity to vote in two races.

There are four candidates running for Wyandotte County Sheriff. Following the primary election, that number will be trimmed to two candidates.

Incumbent LeRoy Green, Jr. is hoping to win a third term as Wyandotte County Sheriff, but he is up against three other candidates who also have the experience to back up their push for the spot as sheriff.

Bob Whisman, of Piper, is a retired FBI agent and former Kansas City, Kan., police officer, who now serves as safety and security program director for the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood.

Donald Ash, of Kansas City, Kan., has worked as a KCKPD officer for 35 years. He retired from the department in January 2007.

The final sheriff candidate, Joseph Pierceall, also of Piper, is a park ranger and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He also ran his own business for 15 years.

The second race of interest to Bonner Springs and Edwardsville residents is the Unified Government Commissioner-at-large District 2 seat. The at-large District 2 area is comprised of Districts 2,3,6 and 7. Edwardsville and Bonner Springs are located in District 7. The current office holder is Dan DeSeure, 2001-2009, who is not running for re-election.

There are four candidates that will be on the primary ballot, and two will move on to the general election April 7. Eric E. Gonzalez, Eric Hite, John J. Mendez and Thomas (T.J.) Reardon, all of Kansas City, Kan., are hoping for the chance to be the next Commissioner-at-large District 2.
