Filings begin to trickle in

January 14, 2009

The filing deadline for the April election is fast approaching, and just a few local residents have filed paperwork.

Leavenworth County Clerk Janet Klasinski said the filing deadline is noon Tuesday, Jan. 27.

To register, there is a $5 fee, or people can file by petition, depending on where they live.

For anyone filing for school board races, that prospective candidate would need to file at the county clerk’s office at the Leavenworth County Courthouse, 300 Walnut St., in Leavenworth.

People interested in filing for city council seats may do so at their respective city halls, or at the courthouse.

For Tonganoxie School Board, Kay D. Smith has filed for re-election for Position 5, while Doug Tate has filed for Position 6. Tate will be seeking his first full term. He was appointed about a year ago after Bob DeHoff resigned in October 2007.

Position 4, which Darlyn Hansen currently holds, will be decided in April as well. Klasinski reported Monday that no one has yet filed for the seat.

At Tonganoxie City Hall, there are three council seats that are open this year: those of Steve Gumm, Jim Truesdell and Jason Ward.

On Tuesday, Assistant City Administrator Kathy Bard said no one has filed yet for those positions.

Applications may be picked up at Tonganoxie City Hall, 321 Delaware St., or at the courthouse. Bard said applications also are online at the city’s Web site, www.tonganoxie.org.

In Basehor, Terry Hill has filed for the mayor’s race. Current Mayor Chris Garcia plans not to seek re-election.

Dennis Mertz, meanwhile, has filed for a council seat. Current councilmember Keith Seifert plans not to seek re-election.

In USD 458 Basehor-Linwood, positions 4, 5 and 6 are open on the school board.

No one has yet filed for Position 4, which Randy Cunningham currently holds. Pat Jeannin holds Position 5, but, so far, Richard Zamora and Leigh Farris have for that seat. And for Position 6, incumbent Gary Johnson has also filed.

The general election will be held Tuesday, April 7. If a primary is needed, it will be held March 3.
