At BLHS gymnasium it’s tournament time
The sounds of basketballs bouncing, coaches yelling and cheerleaders clapping from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. all week can signify only one thing in Basehor: the return of the Bobcat Invitational Basketball tournament.
The first round of the tournament was played over two days, and the following is a brief recap of games not involving Basehor-Linwood.
Holton defeats St. Teresa’s
Holton defeated St. Teresa’s 61-39 in a quarterfinal game. Shelby Dallman led the Wildcats with 19 points and Kylie Miller chipped in 10 points.
Holton took control of the basketball in the second quarter, outscoring St. Teresa’s 21-9 to take a 36-20 halftime lead.
Holton will play Basehor-Linwood at 6 p.m. Thursday. St. Teresa’s was scheduled to play Park Hill on Wednesday night.
Platte County rolls
Platte County defeated Wyandotte 79-15 in the first round of the tournament.
The Pirates led 32-6 at the end of the first quarter, cruising to a 64-point victory. Morgan Johnson led the Pirates with 18 points and Missy Bredlove scored 11 points.
Platte County will play St. Joe Benton at 3 p.m. Thursday. Wyandotte was scheduled to play Ottawa Wednesday.
St. Joe Benton wins in OT
St. Joe Benton defeated Ottawa 58-57 in the best game of the first round. The two teams were tied 49-49 entering overtime after Ottawa outscored St. Joe 20-8 in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, St. Joe Benton outscored Ottawa 9-8.
Karli Sample scored four points in overtime and finished the game with 20. Holly Switzer finished with 17 points.
Jordan Baldwin and Mikela Scott scored 16 points each for Ottawa.
Ottawa rolls Pembrooke Hill
Ottawa defeated Pembrooke Hill 68-35 in a first-round game Monday. The Cyclones led 33-16 at halftime and built on that lead in the second half. The Cyclones’ Adam Hasty led all scorers with 19 points. Joining him in double figures were Kevin Barber, 16 and Chase Dengel, 12.
St. James Academy wins
St. James Academy had three players score in double figures and defeated St. Joe Benton 64-52 on Monday. Clint McCullough and Mike Huppe scored 16 points each. Jordan Bichelmeyer chipped in 13 points.
Anthony Ortega led St. Joe Benton with 22 points and Kyle Ferguson finished with 18 points. St. James Academy outscored St. Joe 15-3 in the second quarter and led 35-19 at halftime. St. James Academy will play Basehor-Linwood at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Park Hill blows out Holton
Chris Nsenki scored 24 points and led Park Hill to a 73-41 win over Holton on Tuesday. In addition, Justin Leathers scored 12 points and Dan Briggs finished with 11 while Joel Hey scored 10 points.
The game was close entering the fourth quarter. In the quarter, Nsenki made three shots from 3-point range and 14 total points to help his team take control of the game. Park Hill outscored them 31-2 in the half. Park Hill made nine 3-pointers in the game.
