Toddlers found unattended, parents charged
Two boys, ages 4 and 1, were discovered unattended in an Edwardsville apartment, after a complaint was made to the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.
The children were found alone in the apartment on Thursday morning, June 4, in the Sun River Apartments complex, 402 River Falls Road.
Edwardsville Police Detective Guy Redinger said SRS officials arrived at the apartment and received no response at the door, then called Edwardsville Police. Upon arrival, police and the SRS officials entered he apartment.
Redinger said the boys were sent to Children’s Mercy Hospital “as a precaution,” but had no information as to what condition they were in when found or how long they had been left alone. He said the children were in SRS custody.
Redinger said the parents of the children, 30-year-old Suraju Oyekanmi and 26-year-old Natisha Rose, were at work Thursday when they were taken into police custody. The two were charged Friday afternoon, June 5, by the Wyandotte County district attorney with two counts of aggravated endangering a child. They were originally placed in the Wyandotte County Jail but were both released on bond, set at $10,000 apiece, during the weekend.
