Letters: Relay for Life a success

June 18, 2009

To the editor:

We would like to thank the entire Kaw Valley community for its overwhelming support of the seventh annual Relay For Life. It was wonderful to see so many people participate in this fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.

We would like to thank mayors Clausie Smith and John McTaggart for welcoming everyone to the Relay and for proclaiming June 12, 2009, as “Relay For Life” Day. Thanks to the VFW Post 6401 for presenting the colors and to Kim Peterson for her beautiful rendition of the national anthem. Thanks to the Rev. Margi Colerick from First Christian Church and Jim Beashore for leading us in prayer. A special thanks to Ronnie Phillips from Q104 for serving as master of ceremonies. We would also like to thank the All The Right Moves dancers for entertaining us, and the Bonner Springs High School for allowing us to use their facilities.

The highlight of the evening was the Luminaria Ceremony where over 1,300 luminarias were lit in honor and memory of cancer survivors. Thanks to Malisa Wallace for her inspirational song, and a special thanks to Dan Muder of Pro Fireworks for providing the awesome fireworks display.

We were supported by a wonderful committee who worked very hard to make this event such a success. We are grateful for their persistence and determination. We would also like to thank the Bonner Springs Fire Department for all of their hard work during the event.

We would particularly like to thank the 43 teams who worked so hard to raise money for the American Cancer Society. We are grateful for the generous support of our event sponsors. Due to the tremendous response of everyone involved, we are proud to announce that we raised over $125,000 to fight cancer. We are proud to be from a community that truly took up the fight!
