Ward downs Basehor in regional semifinals
There was no repeat performance against Bishop Ward.
After one-hitting the Cyclones for a 6-0 victory two weeks ago, Basehor-Linwood fell to the six-time defending Class 4A state champions in the regional semifinals on Wednesday at Eisenhower Field.
Ward thumped 11 hits and took advantage of a handful of BLHS errors in disposing of the Bobcats, 12-6.
Ward scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Basehor proved to be difficult to put away. Brandon Leppke led off the second inning with a single, stole second base and later scored on a ground ball by Jared Patton.
Ryan Lawless and Austin Stubbs both doubled and scored in the third inning, tying the game at 3-3.
Ward erupted for five runs in the bottom of the inning, and the 8-3 advantage seemed safe.
Back came the Bobcats. Jeff Johnson doubled and scored in the bottom of the fourth. Then Nathan Quigley doubled and Lawless singled in the sixth inning. Both scored and drew BLHS within 8-6. Ward put up four runs in the bottom of the inning, and Basehor went quietly with three strikeouts in the seventh inning.
