Winter weather advisory includes portion of NE Kansas

November 16, 2009

More than a month before the official start of winter, the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill has issued its first winter weather advisory for snow of the season.

The advisory, which is in effect from noon today to 6 a.m. Tuesday, is in effect for parts of extreme northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri, including the Leavenworth-Lansing areas.

The National Weather Service said cold rain would gradually mix with and changeover to snow from Leavenworth to Plattsburg, Mo., beginning later this afternoon and continuing into tonight.

A brief band of locally heavy wet snow may result in minor accumulations of up to 2 inches across the advisory area this afternoon and evening.

Warm roads initially may limit accumulation on surfaces but snowfall rates may be high enough to overwhelm those relatively warmer road surfaces. Heavier snow amounts are more likely on elevated and grassy surfaces.

A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. The National Weather Service advises people to be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.
