KVL schools remain unchanged in latest KSHSAA classifications
The Kansas State High School Activities Association on Monday released the school classifications for the 2009-2010 school year, an nothing has changed for Kaw Valley League schools.
Bonner Springs will remain in Class 5A, Basehor-Linwood will stay in Class 4A, and the league’s eight other schools also will stay put.
The classifications for this school year are based on enrollment figures for 10th, 11th and 12th grades only, as of Sept. 21.
Using those numbers, Turner remains the league’s largest school with 859 students in the upper three grades and will stay in Class 5A. Joining the Golden Bears in Class 5A are Mill Valley (758), Lansing (599) and Bonner Springs (550).
Tonganoxie is the largest Class 4A school with an enrollment of 460. Close behind is Basehor-Linwood at 452, followed by Piper (395), Santa Fe Trail (265), Perry-Lecompton (256) and Bishop Ward (210).
Only seven of the 64 schools in Class 4A are smaller than Bishop Ward.
The only schools making changes affecting Class 4A and 5A are: Andover rose from 4A to 5A; Valley Center dropped to 4A; Easton-Pleasant Ridge rose to 4A; new school Maize-South will open in 4A; Silver Lake rose to 4A; and Caney Valley, Riverton and Wichita-Independent fell to 3A.
The KSHSAA also released its enrollment figures for football only for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years. Football uses separate numbers because post-season district matchups are set in two-year increments.
Football enrollment totals are calculated using ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade totals only. Again, all schools stayed the same with Turner, Mill Valley, Lansing and Bonner Springs competing in 5A and the other six KVL schools staying in 4A.
Notable statewide changes are that Wyandotte jumped from 5A to 6A; Blue Valley dropped to 5A; Bishop Miege, Andover Central and Andover rose from 4A to 5A; Sumner Academy and Winfield fell to 4A; Baxter Springs, Holcomb and Russell dropped from 4A to 3A; and new schools Maize-South and Blue Valley Southwest will debut in 4A.
