Former players return, help make inaugural Bobcat Open Shootout Tourney a success
The first annual Bobcat Open Shootout Basketball Tournament took place Friday through Sunday at Basehor-Linwood High School, and a handful of former local prep players helped their teams to first-place finishes.
In the men’s bracket, the K.C. Tropics beat the Shockers, 63-48, in the championship game. Former Basehor-Linwood standouts Chandler Schaake, currently playing at the University of St. Mary and Tanner Bowers led the team. Former Piper standouts Chase Cooks (USM), Robby Mason (Fort Scott), Duane Smith (KCKCC), former St. James Academy star Joe Kelling and former Immaculata player Tim Fitzgerald (USM) all contributed to the victory.
Meanwhile, the Chunky Dunkers won the women’s title with a perfect 3-0 record.
Numerous former Bobcats were on the championship roster as Michelle Chrisman (USM), Courtney Hooks, Ashley Jeannin (Grinnell College), Amber Jeannin, Bren Koontz (Baker University), Cassie Lombardino (Washburn University) and Brooke Sanders (Baker University) all brought home the title in their former high school gym. Former Neodesha standout and current Washburn player Stevi Schultz also was on the team.
Current Basehor-Linwood student-athletes, as well as faculty members, coaches and boosters, helped run the tournament in ways ranging from managing the scoreboard to selling tickets.
The second annual tournament has been tentatively scheduled for March 25-27, 2011. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the boys and girls basketball teams at BLHS.
