Local softball stars from BSHS, BLHS lift KCKCC to victory
The Kansas City Kansas Community College softball program has spent the past few years bringing in talented players from Bonner Springs and Basehor.
On Friday, some of those local signees came through in the clutch and helped the Blue Devils pick up their first victory of the season, 6-5, against Cloud County.
Trailing Cloud on a grand slam home run 4-1, the Blue Devils closed to 4-3 on Briannah Williams’ third home run of the season off the scoreboard in left following a bunt single by Rose Breitenstein in the third and then went ahead 5-4 in the fourth. BLHS graduate Jordanne Leiker singled to lead off and, after a sacrifice by fellow BLHS graduate Codi Schierbaum, Breitenstein was hit by a pitch and Bonner Springs graduate Chelsea Crouch singled to load the bases before Williams drove in her third and fourth runs of the game with a two-run single.
Winning pitcher Sarah Payan provided herself what proved to be the winning run in the sixth when her two-out single scored Jenyce Spence, who had singled and taken second on a passed ball. The run proved to be the difference when Cloud got a leadoff homer in the seventh before Payan retired the final three hitters.
Now 1-9 in the conference, 2-10 in Region VI and 7-15 overall, the Blue Devils still have 18 conference games to play including four road doubleheaders this week.
