Fair time in Tongie
It’s that time of year again. School soon will be starting and summer vacation will give way to all those school year activities and, eventually, cooler weather.
But next week marks the beginning of one of summer’s last hoorahs — the Leavenworth County Fair.
The fair kicks off Monday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds in Tonganoxie, with various 4-H animal judging starting at 9 a.m.
Tuesday, the first project to be judged will be in the electric consultation category at 9 a.m. The opening ceremony gets under way at noon, with Tonganoxie VFW Post 9271 presenting the colors and the Tonganoxie High School Band performing at noon near the flag pole at the fairgrounds.
At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the annual fair parade begins in downtown Tonganoxie. This year’s theme is “A Little Bit Country,” with the draft horse pull to start at 8 p.m.
Other highlights include a Leavenworth County Talent Showcase starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, under the big top and performances by Fast Johnny Ricker at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, and The Fairmounters at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, also under the big top.
Open barrel racing starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, in the rodeo arena and open team penning starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, also in the rodeo arena.
