Garrison to get new command sergeant major

Command Sgt. Maj. Peter L. Cramer will assume the duties of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Leavenworth command sergeant major during an assumption of responsibility ceremony at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31 at Zais Park.

Cramer comes to Fort Leavenworth with 27 years of military service, including an assignment to Kuwait, two assignments to Iraq and an assignment to Afghanistan.

Before coming to Fort Leavenworth to take over the role of command sergeant major, he has served as the command sergeant major with 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry (ABN) (RSTA) at Fort Richardson, Alaska; as a tank commander and later as a platoon sergeant at Fort Irwin, Calif., with 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment; as a drill sergeant and later as a senior drill sergeant with 2nd Battalion, 81st Armor; a platoon sergeant with 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor at Fort Riley; an observer/controller with Operations Group; a first sergeant with 2nd Battalion, 37th Armor at Friedberg, Germany; among others.

Cramer's awards are numerous and include three Bronze Star Medals — one for valor — Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters and six Army Commendation Medals.

He assumes responsibility from Command Sgt. Maj. John T. Cross II, who recently deployed to Afghanistan.
