Bonner Springs wrestlers 4th, BLHS 6th at KVL Dual Tourney
Lansing Bonner Springs experienced wrestling’s equivalent of a photo finish multiple times at the Kaw Valley League Dual Tournament Saturday at Lansing.
The Braves went toe-to-toe with the league’s top three finishers and nearly toppled two of them before ultimately finishing fourth at the tournament.
Bonner Springs lost to Class 5A’s No. 1 ranked team, Lansing, by a lopsided 55-14. Two other ranked 5A teams, No. 8 Mill Valley and No. 10 Turner, narrowly edged the Braves. BSHS fell to Mill Valley, 36-30, and also lost to Turner, 36-30.
It was a clear indicator of just how close the Braves are to having the depth needed to contend with — or possibly dethrone — the league’s three traditional powers.
Turner upset Lansing in the championship dual while Mill Valley edged Bonner Springs in the third-place dual.
The Braves’ loss to Turner came in the final match of competition in Pool B. Also in pool competition, BSHS beat Piper, 42-30, and Tonganoxie, 45-35.
Meanwhile, Basehor-Linwood finished sixth as a team.
The Bobcats lost their first pool match to Mill Valley, 54-27, and then fell to Lansing, 60-17, before bouncing back to crush Bishop Ward, 51-21.
The Bobcats edged Piper in the consolation semifinals, 42-39, before falling to Tonganoxie in the fifth-place dual, 51-26.
The Bobcats were hindered by an incomplete lineup. They didn’t have competitors at 189 pounds, 215 or 285, meaning they automatically gave 18 points to each opponent.
