A 35-year-old Linwood man has been sentenced to life in prison for molesting a relative.

Christopher A. King was sentenced Wednesday in Leavenworth County District Court for two counts of rape, one count of aggravated criminal sodomy and one count of aggravated indecent liberties of a child.

The victim was 8 years old at the time of the sexual molestation and is a relative of the defendant, County Attorney Todd Thompson said.

The defendant was found guilty in October of sexually molesting the girl multiple times between Aug. 20, 2007, and Jan. 3, 2008. The victim is now 11 years old and testified at the two-day jury trial. Another girl testified at the trial that she had also been sexually molested by the defendant in 1999. King was charged with aggravated indecent liberties of a child in Osage County in April 1999 regarding that child. An Osage County jury acquitted the defendant of that charge. The Leavenworth County jury deliberated for seven hours Oct. 27 to reach the unanimous verdicts on all charges. The state requested that bond be revoked for the defendant based upon the jury’s verdicts. Judge Gunnar Sundby denied the prosecution’s request and the defendant remained free on bond pending Wednesday’s sentencing.

At the sentencing hearing, King requested an appeal bond. Sundby ordered King be taken into custody of the Leavenworth County Jail, and that a bond screen report be prepared to determine an appeal bond.

Cheryl A. Marquardt, Leavenworth County assistant county attorney, represented the state. Attorney Scott Toth represented King.
