Conservation workshop coming Feb. 18 to Tonganoxie

The Leavenworth County Conservation District and the Kansas Rural Center will play host to a “Best Management Practices for Winter Feeding Areas” workshop at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18 at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds Administration Building, Tonganoxie. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the free workshop will conclude about 2 p.m.

The workshop, organized through the Lower Kansas Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy, features topics related to implementing best management practices (BMPs) that allow farmers and ranchers to reduce input costs and protect water quality.

Jerry Wooley, water quality coordinator for the Leavenworth County Conservation District, encourages people to attend the event.

“Don’t miss this opportunity to gain insight into the needs of our watershed and to become a partner in the solutions to address these needs,” Wooley said.

Topics and speakers will be:

• Winter Feeding and Grazing, Dale Kirkham, KRC Clean Water Farm Project Field Organizer.

• Reducing Hay Waste, Jody Holthaus, K-State Research and Extension Meadowlark Extension Ag Agent

• Alternative Feeding Sites and Alternative Watering Systems, Will Boyer, K-State Research and Extension Watershed Specialist

• Funding and Service Opportunities, Jason Schmidt, KRC CWFP Field Organizer, and Jerry Wooley, Leavenworth County Conservation District Water Quality Coordinator.

A free lunch is included in the workshop. Door prizes include: 150 feet of geo-textile fabric plus gravel; 150 feet of geo-textile fabric and an alternative watering site tank.
