BLMS 7th-grade boys have up-and-down stretch
It has been a busy two weeks for the Basehor-Linwood Middle School seventh-grade boys basketball teams.
They battled first through a week of nail-biters and emerged victorious, but followed it with a week where they were beat handily.
On Jan. 28, the BLMS varsity squad picked up its first victory of the season as it squeaked past Clark Middle School, 36-32. Joe Gorman poured in 12 points to lead Basehor, Jared Hiss had nine and Carson Fliger added seven.
The junior varsity squad also went down to the wire with CMS but pulled out a 22-17 victory. BLMS used a balanced attack in the win as Casey Jones scored six points and four apiece came from Zach Baxter, Nathan Kenton, Tyler Kendrick and Matt Knight.
Then on Monday, Feb. 1, BLMS was back in action against Tonganoxie for two more close games.
The varsity won its second straight game, 40-37, behind a team-high 13 points from Gorman. Carson Fliger and Landon Fliger scored nine apiece.
The JV squad also squeaked out a thrilling victory, 25-24. Again, balance was key to the JV as Knight and Kendrick led the way with six points apiece and Jesse Smallwood had four. Kendrick went coast-to-coast and scored a layup at the buzzer for the game-winner. BLMS never led until that point but closed the game on a 14-5 run.
After the close victories, the road got bumpy for BLMS as it was swept by Monticello Trails on Feb. 4 and again by Piper on Feb. 8.
The Monticello Trails varsity beat Basehor, 51-39. Waterman led the BLMS effort with 13 points and Gorman added 12.
The MTMS JV rolled to a 44-19 victory. Kendrick led BLMS with six points.
Against Piper, the varsity got 10 points from Waterman and eight more from Gorman but lost, 48-31. The JV squad also lost, 33-21.
