BLHS qualifies 5 wrestlers for state
De Soto Five was the number of choice for Basehor-Linwood at the Class 4A regional wrestling tournament Saturday at De Soto High School.
The Bobcats qualified five wrestlers for the state tournament in Salina and finished fifth in the team points with 104.5 points.
Louisburg placed fourth with 136.5 points, Baldwin placed third with 148 points. There was a close race for first place with St. James Academy edging Eudora by half a point.
Mike Torrez placed second in the 103-pound weight class, losing to Bryce Shoemaker of Baldwin in the finals.
Symon Seaton won the 125-pound weight class with a win over T. Wright of Eudora. Tyler Simpson qualified in the 130-pound weight class, placing third in the tournament. Derek Pike qualified in the 135-pound weight class, placing second.
Joe Johnson qualified in the 160-pound weight class. He defeated a wrestler from Ottawa, 11-4, in a consolation semifinals match and finished third in the tournament.
He controlled the entire match.
Johnson dropped into the consolation bracket after losing in the semifinals to a wrestler from Paola.
Antonio Ferro lost in the 112-pound weight class in a close wrestling match to a wrestler from Ottawa. A win in the match would have qualified him for the state tournament.
