Lansing girls win 2nd straight invitational crown

Briggs once again MVP

January 26, 2010

With an easy, 50-33 victory against Silver Lake on Saturday, the Lansing High girls basketball team won the Tonganoxie Invitational for the second straight season.

“We were shooting for back-to-back,” Lions coach Keith Andrews said.

The coach also wanted LHS (9-2) to get off to a good start in the title game, and the girls responded with a dominating first quarter, outscoring SLHS (9-4) 14-0 during the first eight minutes.

Silver Lake finally made a basket in the second quarter but Lansing’s defense remained stout throughout the game as the Eagles hit just 12 of 39 shot attempts.

The championship trophy wasn’t the only award the Lions brought home in back-to-back invitational appearances. The tournament’s MVP, for the second year in a row, was point guard Amy Briggs.

She scored eight points, passed out five assists and buried two three-pointers while playing part of the championship game with a twisted ankle.

“She’s just an easy-going kid who just loves to play,” Andrews said of his senior point guard. “She’s the first one in the gym, the last one to leave and likes to lead.”

Though Briggs’ stats aren’t always overwhelming, Andrews said her presence is dominating because she communicates, sets people up and keeps her teammates in line. The coach told the Lions they won’t realize what an impact she makes until next season, when she is no longer with the team.

“She’s a difference-maker, obviously,” Andrews said. “It’s real special to coach her.”

At 4-0 in the Kaw Valley League, Andrews thinks Lansing’s play at the invitational should help the team as it resumes conference play.

“We just want to make sure we build on this momentum and take care of business,” he said.

Andrews said Piper, Tonganoxie, Basehor-Linwood and Mill Valley all could contend for the top spots in the KVL.

“It’s tough,” the LHS coach said of the league. “You’ve got to be ready to play every night.”
