Bobcat wrestlers have 3 champs at Paola
Basehor-Linwood wrestlers are proving that quality is better than quantity this season.
The Bobcats had eight wrestlers compete in the Paola Invitational and left with three individual champions, leading the team to a seventh-place finish.
“I was hoping we would finish higher,” coach Ed Seaton said. “We had three champions and a third. We just didn’t have the numbers at all the other weights.”
Symon Seaton placed first in the 130-pound weight class, winning the championship 6-0 against Sasha Ambrose of Bishop Miege. Seaton wrestled up a weight class in the tournament to take on heavier, stronger opponents.
In addition, Derek Pike, wrestling at 135 pounds, won the first tournament of his career. Pike captured the crown by defeating Austin Gibson of Effingham, 8-6, in the finals.
Joe Johnson placed first in the 160-pound weight class, defeating Blaine Hill of Shawnee Mission East, 5-0, in the finals.
Mike Torrez wrestled up a weight class and placed third in the 112-pound weight class. Typically, he wrestles at 103.
“He decided to wrestle up and got beat in the semis in overtime,” Seaton said. “He wasn’t shooting, the kid just waited and beat him 3-2.”
Antonio Ferro went 0-2 in the 119-pound weight class, but his coach said Ferro wrestled well tactically.
Eli Elliott made his varsity debut, finishing 0-2 in the 125-pound weight class.
The Bobcats will wrestle in a tournament Saturday at Olathe North.
