Thomas returns to Wizards
The Kansas City Wizards on Wednesday re-acquired central defender Shavar Thomas in a trade with the Philadelphia Union.
The Wizards shipped two second round MLS SuperDraft selections, one in 2011 and another in 2012, to Philadelphia in exchange for the Jamaican defender.
Thomas, 29, has played in 151 games for five MLS teams during eight seasons. He previously played for the Wizards from 2004-2006.
"We really like Shavar's MLS experience and the strength he brings to our back line," Wizards manager Peter Vermes said. "We are always looking to improve our roster, and he adds quality depth to the center of our defense."
Thomas was the 10th overall pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas — formerly the Dallas Burn — and played 15 games with 14 starts as a rookie. He was traded to Kansas City and had a breakthrough year in 2004 as he played 25 games with 22 starts and helped the Wizards advance to the MLS Cup final and win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for the first time in franchise history.
