Leavenworth County attorney warning about asphalt company scamming elderly residents

The Leavenworth County attorney is warning Leavenworth County residents to be on the lookout for a fly-by-night asphalt company that already has scammed a few elderly Leavenworth residents.

Todd Thompson said he’s received calls from relatives of elderly residents who had people from an asphalt company inform them they had surplus asphalt and could use it on their drive or parking area at a discounted price.

Thompson said that in one instance, asphalt workers quoted a discounted price of $2,000, but charged the Leavenworth resident $12,000 after the job was completed. When a relative found out about the higher price, they stopped payment on the check through the bank.

Thompson said of people who contacted him, they knew of three or four other people who were approached by an asphalt company, and in some instances they also made overpriced payments.
