Army officials say the Main Gate at Fort Leavenworth is open again after a "suspicious package" was found in an entering vehicle.

The officials said discovery of the package around 10:30 a.m. Thursday prompted the gate closing as a precautionary measure. Both inbound and outbound traffic at the gate were diverted.

The suspicious package was found in a sports utility vehicle entering the fort. All vehicles driven onto the post are stopped and checked by security personnel.

Rebecca Snead, media relations coordinator at the fort, reported at 11:40 a.m. the gate had reopened.

Officials have not identified the contents of the package, but Snead said after personnel examined the package it was determined "the package did not pose a threat to returning to normal operation."

"Security identified a suspicious package and quickly followed operating procedures as a precaution for the safety of the community," she said in a news release. "The fact that everything was back to normal operation so quickly shows how well trained our security is and that they take precaution seriously."
