Tonganoxie man sent to hospital following semitrailer accident
A semi trailer landed in a ditch after a tire blew out Thursday east of Linwood.
The accident occurred about 9:25 a.m. Thursday roughly 3 miles east of Linwood on Kansas Highway 32 at 18476 Linwood Rd.
John Saucier, Tonganoxie, was driving the semitrailer west on K-32 when the right front tire blew out, he said. Saucier had cuts on his hand and some bruises, but said he did not need medical treatment. The passenger, Bill Theno, also of Tonganoxie, was in the passenger seat and was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center by Leavenworth County Emergency Medical Service. Saucier said Theno had a large gash on his hand and that both were wearing their seat belts.
Saucier said he was carrying 12 hay bales on the trailer. The semi took out a tree on the side of the road. Roughly 150 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the engine, said Chuck Magaha, Leavenworth County Emergency Management director. It was thought that transmission fuel and motor oil also might have spilled, Magaha said.
Spagsorb, a materiel that Magaha likened to peat moss, was used to absorb the fuel spill. Magaha said the Kansas Department of Transportation was being called to the scene to evaluate the spill as well.
Sherman and Reno Township fire departments also were on scene, as were the Kansas Highway Patrol and Leavenworth County Sheriff’s office.
Kansas Highway Patrol troopers Thursday morning responded to a semitrailer that rolled over into a ditch on Kansas Highway 32 about 3 miles east of Linwood.
A KHP dispatcher said at 9:55 a.m. troopers were headed to the scene at 18476 Linwood Road in Leavenworth County. Information about possible injuries was unavailable, she said.
Early reports indicated a possible oil leak from the semitrailer, which was carrying hay bales.
The two-lane highway was blocked off to traffic, though some vehicles were allowed to pass through starting at 10:45 a.m. when semi trucks were allowed to travel through that stretch of road.
