Come to the gala
Our annual Holiday Art Show and Gala’s opening reception is from 5 till 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at the Heritage Center in Leavenworth. The theme this year is “A Brush with History”. At least one entry from each artist has to do with the history of art.
I decided to go back to the cave drawings that took place about 20,000 B.C. and used my imagination. I chose not to go back as far as the first known cave drawing in Blombos cave in Africa, which dates 100,000 years. They check the dates by radiocarbon dating. I am anxious to find out what era the other artists chose for their entries.
The earliest form of art, which has survived, is often found in large caves. The walls and ceilings of some of these caves are 30 feet in the air, and it is hard to imagine how they went about climbing so high. They must have had an art studio, so to speak, and there must have been more than just a few artists involved. This art work has been found around the world, Europe, Australia, Africa and China. This type of art depicted animals, humans, weapons, maps and symbols. African art was used as an integral part of society’s rituals, dances and ceremonies.
Our reception will have food, wine and music at no charge. The Leavenworth County Artist’s Association is happy to have Susan Nelson as the judge. She is the associate professor of art at the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth. The show awards are first place, $300, second place $200, third place $100, and the People’s Choice is $50. The Goodjohn Award of $100 goes to a member of the LCAA. There will be three honorable mentions and one theme award ribbons.
This gala is an elegant affair and enjoyed by all. Most of the art will be for sale. Come to the gala and enjoy a good time along with doing some Christmas shopping.
