Wizards shut out Chicago

October 13, 2010

The Kansas City Wizards secured a significant road victory at Chicago on Tuesday in a 2-0 win over the Fire that tightens the MLS Cup playoff race with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Goals from Wizards captain Davy Arnaud and rookie Teal Bunbury, along with a shutout from goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, earned a crucial three points as Kansas City climbed closer to Colorado for the final postseason position.

The Wizards remain in third place in the Eastern Conference standings with 36 points, moving four points clear of conference rivals Chicago in fourth, and now travel to New England for their final road match of the 2010 regular season on Saturday. Kansas City — the last remaining team in MLS with a chance of moving into playoff contention — can earn a berth with victories in each of its last two matches and losses by Colorado in their final two fixtures, at Los Angeles on Saturday and at home to Real Salt Lake on October 23.

The Wizards will be riding the momentum of an impressive performance on Tuesday when they face the Revolution. Kansas City earned just its third victory in Chicago in club history, and did so with a well-balanced effort, scoring twice on the offensive end, while the Wizards' defense limited Chicago to just two shots on goal.
