Officials evacuating some areas near gas leak as precaution
Crews continue to monitor a gas leak Wednesday afternoon west of Bonner Springs and, as a precautionary measure, are evacuating all residences and businesses within a half-mile downwind of the leak.
Leavenworth County Administrator Heather Morgan said the leak occurred in a chlorine gas tank in a building adjacent to the Eagles Banquet Hall, 14230 Linwood Rd. The leak is in one of two 150-gallon chlorine gas tanks. Morgan said it's unknown whether there is a leak in the other tanks as well. The private contractor who owns the tanks lives in Nebraska and was headed to the site, Morgan said about 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Anyone traveling within a half-mile of the area could experience delays and detours, Morgan said.
One person at the scene had minor respiratory problems, but declined transportation to a hospital, Morgan said.
Morgan said the leak was most likely caused by a mechanical issue.
Fire departments from Bonner Springs and Tonganoxie, Sherman and Fairmount Township fire departments, as well as Leavenworth County hazardous waste officials responded to the scene. Bonner Springs police and Kansas Highway Patrol are assisting with traffic.
