St. James Academy takes top seed in 4A substate volleyball bracket
St. James Academy’s quest for a third straight Class 4A state championship begins Saturday at the substate tournament at Tonganoxie.
The Thunder have been not just dominant at the state level where they’ve been the top-ranked team in 4A all season, but they’ve also spent most of the season ranked number one in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com.
Still, the Thunder have been beatable. After defeating the top-ranked team in 5A — Bishop Miege — three times this season, the Stags knocked off the Thunder last week.
Still, St. James is 36-1 and appears poised to make another run at a championship.
St. James opens sub-state play against eighth-seed Basehor-Linwood (12-22) at 1 p.m. The Bobcats hit a mid-season hot stretch and placed third at the Louisburg Tournament, but they’ve struggled since. They finished seventh last week at the Kaw Valley League Tournament.
The winner of that match draws either fourth-seed Atchison (21-14) or fifth-seed Bishop Ward (20-16).
ON the other half of the bracket, second-seed Tonganoxie (29-1) will face seventh-seed Bonner Springs (17-18) in the first round and third-seed Sumner Academy (23-12) will square off against sixth-seed Piper (18-18). Bonner Springs enters having won 13 of its last 17 matches, but two of those losses came to Tonganoxie.
The substate champion advances to the state tournament Oct. 29-30 at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.
First match begins at 1 p.m.
A 20-minute warm-up period will be allowed before each first-round match, and a 10-minute warm-up period will be allowed before the later matches.
