BSHS volleyball rides momentum to 5th-place finish at KVL Tourney

October 21, 2010

A red-hot second half of the season continued for the Bonner Springs volleyball team as it battled to a fifth-place finish at the Kaw Valley League Tournament on Saturday at the Bonner Springs District P.E. Center.

That performance — coupled with victories against Bishop Ward and Turner on Monday and a loss Tuesday against Tonganoxie — gives the Braves 13 victories in their last 17 matches.

Bonner Springs is now 17-18 this season and within striking distance of accomplishing its goal for the season of having a .500 record a year after going 9-27.

The Braves opened the league tournament with back-to-back losses. First, they fell to Bishop Ward, 25-19, 25-20, and then lost to Tonganoxie, 25-12, 25-19. They built some momentum in their final match of pool play, however, when they pounded Basehor-Linwood, 25-10, 25-10.

From there, BSHS won both of its matches in the consolation bracket. First, it battled past Turner in three games, 25-11, 25-27, 25-11, and then won another three-game thriller in the fifth-place match against Piper, 25-15, 11-25, 26-24.

Lansing won the league championship by fighting off Mill Valley in a three-game set in the finals.

BOBCATS 7TH AT KVL TOURNEY

Basehor-Linwood had a tough day at the tournament. The Bobcats finished last in their pool and posted a 1-4 record for the day.

In addition to the loss to Bonner Springs, the Bobcats also fell to Tonganoxie, 25-18, 25-11, and Bishop Ward, 25-18, 25-19.

From there, the Bobcats moved into the consolation bracket. They battled tougher in their semifinal match against Piper but lost, 25-22, 25-19.

The Bobcats closed out the day with their lone victory. It came in the seventh-place match when BLHS beat Turner, 25-22, 25-23.
