Dove, Vasquez medal to pace BLHS golfers
Marisa Dove and Nicole Vasquez claimed medalist honors to pace the Basehor-Linwood girls golf team on Wednesday at the Perry-Lecompton Invitational.
Dove placed 12th and Vasquez finished 15th, leading the team to a fifth-place tournament finish that was stopped after nine holes.
Rain delayed play at the start and twice during the tournament before coaches decided to cancel the remainder of the tournament after nine holes were completed.
“After nine holes, a group decision that it was too miserable, and we didn’t want to put kids in that situation,” coach Noah Simpson said.
As a result of a shotgun start, players were judged based on how many strokes over par they were on the nine holes they played. The players who scored the lowest in relation to par would win the tournament. The lowest number over par won the tournament.
Overall, Simpson liked how his golfers performed.
“I was extremely pleased with the kids,” he said. “We placed fifth out of 10 teams which was good for us early in the season. I know for a fact the kids are excited and felt good about how they did. It was a solid team performance. I am encouraged about where we are at early in the season.”
With a tournament complete, the team’s challenge is for players to continue working hard and cut down on the number of strokes they shoot in each tournament, Simpson said.
