Basehor-Linwood golfers 5th at Piper
The weather was darn near perfect, but the scores didn’t quite measure up at the Piper Invitational Tuesday at Sunflower Hills Golf Course.
Just 10 players shot below 100 at the 11-team tournament, four of them from champion Jefferson County West.
The long, hilly course had plenty to do with the high numbers, Basehor-Linwood coach Noah Simpson said.
Also, he noted, it was just his team’s first 18-hole tournament of the season.
The Bobcats competed Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the Perry-Lecompton Invitational, but thunderstorms limited the tournament to nine holes. Simpson said his team bounced back well playing 18 holes.
“The good thing was we had three kids within five strokes of medaling, so I’m pretty happy with that,” he said.
BLHS finished fifth overall. Jeff West won, followed by Silver Lake, St. James Academy and De Soto/Mill Valley.
Jeff West’s Jade Brake was the tournament champion with an 84. The 15th-place medalist fired a 105. Nicole Vasquez — who took 15th at Perry — led BLHS with a 106. Marissa Dove — who was 12th at Perry — had a 107 and Samantha Espinoza shot a 110. Rachel Van Fleet fired a 119 and Brooke Schler had a 134.
