Paving project to begin on I-70 in Wyandotte County

September 27, 2010

A resurfacing project that’s expected to last until mid-October will begin at 7 p.m. today in the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 70, from 118th Street to Kansas Highway 7 in Wyandotte County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said work would take place overnight, Monday through Friday, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day.

Crews will complete milling work first followed by the overlay work. Eastbound and westbound I-70 will have varying lane closures during the project duration. A posted speed limit of 60 mph will be in effect overnight through the project work zone.

KDOT said no work or lane closures would be scheduled for Friday, Oct. 1, through Sunday, Oct. 3, due to the race weekend at Kansas Speedway.

When work is completed on the 118th Street to K-7 section of I-70, crews will then move to the ramps at the I-70 and Turner Diagonal interchange to complete resurfacing work. When this occurs, these ramps will be closed and marked detours will be provided. Traffic will detour via 78th St to I-70 then back to the Turner Diagonal.

Drivers should expect little delays and are advised to use alternate routes on I-70, if possible. Updated daily lane/ramp closure information for this resurfacing project can be viewed online at:

Workers will mill away the top 2-inches of pavement then apply a new 2-inch layer of asphalt over the existing pavement which will smooth the road and fill cracks that can shorten pavement life. Once the asphalt overlay is complete, workers will then replace the permanent pavement markings on the resurfaced roadway.

Superior Bowen is the primary contractor for this $685,000 resurfacing project. The scheduled completion date for the entire project is mid-October.
