Shawnee third-grader life-flighted from BSHS track after fall
A third-grade child fell off the bleachers at the Bonner Springs High School track Tuesday evening and was life-flighted to an area hospital.
Brock Varzaly of Shawnee was one of the Sacred Heart Catholic School students running up and down bleachers as a warm-up for track practice when he fell about 6:30 p.m., his father, Brent Varzaly, said. Brock was near the top of the bleachers when he fell, and while parents saw him falling, they still aren’t sure how the fall occurred, Varzaly said.
The school’s assistant athletics director and a spectator who works in emergency medical services were on the scene and helped stabilize Brock until EMS arrived. John Claxton, Bonner Springs EMS chief, said though Brock had regained consciousness and received non-life-threatening injuries, the LifeStar Helicopter was called to the scene prior to EMS being dispatched.
Brock was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, where his injuries were determined to be a fractured left wrist, a laceration on his liver and some bleeding on his brain, but no swelling. Varzaly said doctors feared he might have injured some vertebrae, but a CAT-scan came back clear. The family isn’t sure how long Brock will be in the hospital, but Varzaly said he is recovering well.
