Sporting KC collapses late, falls to FC Dallas

August 28, 2011

Sporting Kansas City appeared to be on cruise control against FC Dallas, but the visitors struck three times in the final 20 minutes and shocked Sporting KC 3-2 Saturday night at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

A standing-room-only crowd of 20,018 was on hand to watch what appeared would be an easy victory for the home team for most of the match. It was the largest crowd for an MLS match in stadium history.

Sporting Kansas City threatened early with Chance Myers firing a half-volley wide of the far post in the seventh minute and then Teal Bunbury playing Omar Bravo behind the FC Dallas defense only to see Ugo Ihemelu recover to disrupt the breakaway in the 20th minute.

Kei Kamara opened the scoring two minutes later, poking the ball away from Ihemelu and racing into the penalty area to fire a shot low and inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.

The Sporting Kansas City lead doubled in the 68th minute as defender Matt Besler’s free kick skimmed off the head of FC Dallas defender Andrew Jacobson inside the penalty area and fell to Bunbury, unmarked inside the six-yard box. The second-year striker played the ball across the goal mouth where Bravo finished the tap-in for his seventh goal of the season.

FC Dallas answered two minutes later when Andrew Jacobson unleashed a free kick through the penalty area and past Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen to bring the visitors within 2-1.

Still, it appeared Sporting KC would hang on until Bunbury was sent off in the 76th minute with his second yellow card of the match. Sporting Kansas City was forced to play a man down, and it proved disasterous.

Maicon Santos headed home a cross from Brek Shea to tie the match in the 89th minute, and then Santos served up an assist to Bobby Warshaw for the game-winner on a header at the back post in the second minute of stoppage time.

Sporting Kansas City is now 9-8-9 overall and remains in second place in the Eastern Conference. The club is 6-2-4 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

Sporting KC next plays at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at home against the LA Galaxy.
