Unified Government website receives A- from sunshine organization

December 21, 2011

The Sunshine Review, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to state and local government transparency, has awarded the website of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., a grade of A- for the information it provides the public.

Wyandotte County, Johnson County and Sedgwick County were the only three out of 105 Kansas counties to receive an A grade for their websites.

The Sunshine Review uses a “10-point Transparency Checklist” to evaluate the content of every state and more than 5,000 local government websites, determining how thoroughly the website shares information about budgets and other financial information, meeting agendas, names of elected and administrative officials, building permit information, details about contracts and purchasing and access to other government records.

The only charge against each of the three “A” graded Kansas counties was that information about lobbying was considered to be only partially provided.
