Wristen: Turbulent Tuesday throws KVL boys’ race up for grabs

February 16, 2011

It was a turbulent Tuesday for the Kaw Valley League, and suddenly the race for the boys basketball league title is wide open.

In a stunning turn of events, the league’s top two teams in the standings both tumbled Tuesday night. First, Mill Valley took down Basehor-Linwood, 51-46, at BLHS in a performance that avenged a close loss during the teams’ first meeting in December.

The Jaguars delivered perhaps their finest performance of the past three years to secure the victory. Meanwhile, BLHS coach Mike McBride was frustrated with his team’s poor showing less than 24 hours after holding off Bonner Springs by just one point at home.

Maybe 15 minutes after the Jaguars finished off the Bobcats, Tonganoxie was busy pulling off an upset of its own just eight miles down Highway 24-40.

The Chieftains played host to Lansing — a team that entered the night unbeaten in league play — and they used a strong fourth quarter to rally for a two-point victory.

In the course of one wild night, the Kaw Valley League was thrown back up for grabs and any one of three teams could reach up and take it.

Lansing sits atop the KVL with one league loss, but Mill Valley and Basehor-Linwood are just a game back. All three teams still must face each other once more this season.

TEAM KVL ALL

Lansing 9-1 12-4

Basehor 9-2 15-2

Mill Valley 9-2 10-7

Bonner Springs 5-5 11-5

Bishop Ward 5-5 5-10

Tonganoxie 3-8 8-9

Piper 1-9 3-13

Turner 1-10 1-17

Lansing will travel to Basehor-Linwood on Friday. Meanwhile, Mill Valley will travel to struggling Piper.

On Tuesday, BLHS will take on last-place Turner while Mill Valley will hit the road for Lansing.

After that, the Bobcats will face Bonner Springs on Friday, Feb. 25, while the Jaguars will close out the regular season slate with Bishop Ward.

Yes, the league is up for grabs after one crazy night. Now it seems clear we’re in store for a wild finish.
