Tonganoxie police shoot armed man, Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office investigating

February 24, 2011

A man was transported to the hospital early Thursday morning after being shot by a Tonganoxie police officer.

Tonganoxie Police Chief Jeffery Brandau said in a statement released Thursday that officers responded to a disturbance in the 400 block of 12th Street.

"Shortly after officers arrived on the scene, the officers shot an armed individual that is alleged to have been a party to the disturbance," according to Brandau's statement.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., for treatment for a shotgun wound, Brandau said.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office was on the scene Thursday morning and is investigating the incident.

"No further information is available as the investigation is ongoing, and all information is preliminary," Brandau said.

Lt. Billy Adcox, a police spokesman, said the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, which is standard procedure for when an officer is involved in a shooting.
