For the 52nd annual year, the Abdallah Shrine Temple brought rodeo and several hundred cowboys and cowgirls to the Kansas City area.

Competition at the annual event held at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds wrapped up Saturday night, with $29,900 and points up for grabs for the Prairie Circuit Finals, held later this year. Contestants battled mud the entire weekend, but it didn’t hinder the top bull rider, Brett Stall, who rode the bull 577 True Blood from the Beutler and Son Rodeo Co. for 89 points.

The Detroit Lakes, Minn., cowboy had seen the bull earlier this year but had never been on him before.

“I saw him in Lubbock, Texas, where Cody Teel was an 80 on him,” he said. “Heck, he was a good bull, so it worked out.”

Stall followed him, jump for jump.

Stall, 21, is going down the rodeo road full time. He competed in the Minnesota High School Rodeo Association, winning the state championship in 2008 and, in three of the four years of high school rodeo, never finished out of the top twenty. Minnesota isn’t known as rodeo country, but “we have some hidden hands there,” he said.

Other winners included bareback rider Frank Morton, Wright, Kan. and saddle bronc rider Tyrel Larsen, Inglis, Manitoba. Timed event winners were steer wrestler Ryan Swayze, Freedom, Okla.; tie-down roper Blake Ash, Aurora, Mo.; team ropers Casper May, Pryor, Okla. and Derrick Peterson, Stillwell, Okla., and barrel racer Jana Turner, Perkins, Okla.

Next year’s dates for the 53rd annual Shrine Rodeo will be May 24-26, 2012.
