VFW fetes contest winners
The Olsen-McGraw-Thompson-Goins Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6401 and Ladies Auxiliary had a Commander’s Banquet Feb. 26 at Tall Oaks Conference Center, Linwood.
After dinner, Youth Committee Chairman Jim Jenkins announced the winners for the Post and Auxiliary Scholarship awards. Ladies Auxiliary President Ann Williams and Commander Don Norman presented the certificates and checks to the winners.
Winners of the Patriot’s Pen, an essay contest for middle school students, were as follows: First place, Griffin Mareske, $100; second place, Alvaro Romo, $75; third place, Sydnei Patton, $50. All winners are in seventh grade at Clark Middle School.
This year’s theme was “Does Patriotism Still Matter?”
Griffin Mareske represented VFW 6401 in district contest and took first place. In the state contest he placed fifth out of nine entries.
Winners of the Voice of Democracy, a voice recording contest for high school students, were as follows: First place, Scintila Capalla, $250; second place, Quinn Richert, $100; third place, Alli Augustine, $75. All winners are Bonner Springs High School students.
This year’s theme was “Will my Generation Have America’s Future?”
